European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other legal developments:

  • A US district judge has blocked attempts to cut federal homeland security funding to local governments that do not comply with specific federal immigration rules. The judge stated the case was “a further instance” of linking government assistance to policy compliance.
  • Approval was given for the deployment of hundreds of national guard troops to New Orleans ahead of the new year, coinciding with an active border security initiative.
  • The nation of Palau has agreed to accept a limited number of individuals from the US in return for additional aid, after concluding a formal agreement with US authorities.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit seeking the removal of a political figure’s name from a well-known cultural institution in Washington DC.

Experts point out that comments regarding Venezuelan oil align with a wider ideology in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, drawing comparisons with past foreign policy actions.
