On his first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reimagine” New York City, promising “a new era” and an audacious beginning to his tenure.

An Unprecedented Mayor

The new figure, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A time such as this seldom arrives and rarer still is it that the public whose hands are upon the controls for transformation,” Mamdani remarked.

Defying advice to lower expectations, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will lead expansively and audaciously.”

Adhering to Democratic Socialist Ideals

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his core beliefs. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will govern as one. I will not abandon my convictions for concern of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to an enthusiastic response.

The ceremony was a dual event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a former subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's rise as a victory over powerful interests.

A Sweeping Platform

Mamdani now faces one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a plan including:

• Subsidized daycare
• No-cost bus transit
• A cap on rents for approximately 1 million households
• A pilot of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion price tag of these programs may be challenging to fund. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the richest residents and corporations. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating Political Challenges

The new mayor also faces skepticism from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a appointments director stepped down over offensive past social media posts.

Mamdani has sought to address these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was described as surprisingly productive.

The Fundamental Challenges of Leadership

Ultimately, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in delivering city upkeep: sanitation, reducing the rat infestation, fixing roadways, and ensuring reliable transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's anti-crime efforts, citing record low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his address with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
